If you've ever meet a French bulldog, odds are you'll remember that squished face, those bat ears and over the top personality for the rest of your life. They are nicknamed "Little Clowns" for reasons that are self-evident when in the presence of such an adorable beast.

Frenchie's became Frenchie's when the English, yes the English, started breeding the runts of Bulldog litters to produce a smaller dog that would better serve the purpose of catching mice and rats aboard merchant ships and fit better on the laps of English lacemakers.

Eventually the feisty little French Bulldog made it's way across the english channel to Paris where it became the must have fashion accessory to the Parisian women of the night, who of course were the favorite people of the impressionist Art crowd of the 1880's. Just imagine Montmartre circa 1885; artists, dancers, cheap wine and the ever present smile of the French Bulldog aka. le Bouledogue Francais.

The "Frenchie" is frequently confused for a Boston Terrier and for good reason. The Boston was actually bred by mixing the likes of a Bull Terrier (Spuds McKenzie) and our friend the French Bulldog. The Frenchie is far less "hyper" than their "Beantown"cousins. French Bulldogs love to play but only for short energy filled bursts, then you will find them gently snoring away the remainder of the afternoon lazily asleep on the couch.

Concluding, that if you are the lucky owner of a French Bulldog you already know the joys of having a trusting companion such as a LuLu, Pierre, Andre or a Mimi. These dogs have the nickname of le Clowns and for good reason, they will provide a lifetime a laughs and happiness to their owners.
